Volume VIII, Number 11

The Big Picture - Corvette in Miniature
by Doug Breithaupt

As the British say, 'it was a near-run thing' to see if I could fit all my Corvette models on the pool table. With no space to spare, they all fit, although a few ended up on the rails. About 300 models are represented. The Corvette is likely the best represented car in small-scale. Thanks to efforts by Johnny Lightning to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Corvette, one example from every year has been done. In addition, many concept cars, race cars and customs have appeared over the years. Almost every toy car maker has offered a Corvette model at some time. The results are here to see.

Corvettes are easily the largest single model represented in my collection. With over 50 years of models to choose from, the Corvette is one of the oldest model names to remain in continuous production.

C3 and C4 models are the most plentiful.

Certain years like the '57, '63, '68, '78 and '83 models seem to be the most popular.

Is there a favored color for Corvettes? Red and yellow seem to be well-represented. White seems to be the most traditional Corvette color, perhaps due the the fact that the original '53 model only came in that color. Matchbox may win the prize for the most color variations of their Corvette models. The '62 Corvette by Matchbox is well-represented in almost every major color.

The GMP C5-R (third from left, bottom row) may be the world's best 1:64 scale model.

Johnny Lightning has truly filled in the Corvette gaps with production and concept cars.
